In many ways, we are moving from sustainable investing as a good idea to a reality that has implications for all investment portfolios. Being able to incorporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into investment decisions is becoming an increasingly important skill for anyone working in the investment industry.

The CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing can help you meet this growing demand. By equipping you with the knowledge and skills neccessary to incorporate ESG considerations into the investment decision-making process, you can better support client demand and play an important role in prioritizing sustainability, ethical practices, and social responsibility.

The Certificate in ESG Investing is owned, administered, and awarded globally by CFA Institute having previously been developed and awarded by CFA Society UK.

What You’ll Learn
Upon completion of this certificate, you will gain knowledge in the following areas:

Context for different approaches to responsible investment and specifically, consideration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors.
Underlying issues that constitute factors within each of the environmental, social and governance areas.
Broader sustainability context and global initiatives.
The ESG market: relevance, size, scope, key drivers and challenges, and risks and opportunities.
Environmental factors, systemic relationships, material impacts, megatrends and approaches to environmental analysis at country, sector and company levels.
Social factors, systemic relationships, material impacts and approaches to social analysis at country, sector and company levels.
Governance factors, key characteristics, main models and material impacts.
Engagement and stewardship.
ESG analysis, valuation and integration.
Ability to analyze how ESG factors may affect industry and company performance, and security valuation across a range of asset classes.
ESG integrated portfolio construction and management.
Application of various of approaches to ESG analysis and integration across a range of asset classes.
Investment mandates, portfolio analytics and client reporting.

Candidates must have one of the following:

a) a Bachelor degree or equivalent
in any subject;

b) be studying toward this
undergraduate degree with 11 months or fewer
remaining; or

c) a combination of 4,000 hours of
professional work experience and/or higher
education that was acquired over a minimum of
three sequential years.

This certificate is designed for investment practitioners who want to learn more about how to analyze and integrate material ESG factors into their day-to-day roles. It is suitable for anyone working in front or back offices and adjacent roles — including sales and distribution, wealth management, product development, financial advice, consulting, risk — as well as anyone looking to improve their understanding of ESG issues.

No prerequisites but prior knowledge of the investment process is recommended.

The CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions.

To be completed within 2 hours and 20 minutes
Section 1: Exam Questions
Section 2: End of Exam Notification
Section 3: Survey
Administered in person at test centers in select markets*
Online proctoring is available, depending on local regulations and system capability

CFA Institute provides two exam scheduling options for taking your exam:

In-person at a test center in select markets
Online via online proctoring provided you meet requirements
Before enrolling, check if remote examination or a physical test center is available in your area. ProProctor remote proctoring is not available in all markets at this time.

The registration fee for the Certificate in ESG Investing is USD795.

Register
Once registered, you will have up to 6 months to schedule your exam with Prometric. We recommend beginning to study before scheduling. Then depending on your study pacing, schedule your exam one month prior to your desired exam period. At a minimum, allow 2 working days after receiving your registration confirmation to schedule your exam.

If you do not schedule your exam within this period, you may re-register for USD 595. Please note that scheduling will open on 1 February 2023.

    Exams are graded as either “pass” or “did not pass,” along with detailed performance feedback.

Your exam results will be provided on-screen at the end of your examination, and a copy will be emailed to you.

    You can access your score report to view your results within 24 hours of exam completion via https://scorereports.prometric.com/

Your results will also be available in your CFA Institute account within 14 days of your completed exam appointment.
